Needlepoint Canvas FAQ: Common Questions Answered
Updated October 26, 2026
This page answers the questions people most often ask about needlepoint canvases, in short, self-contained answers. Each answer links to a longer guide. As of October 26, 2026, this directory lists about 31,731 canvases from 310 designers.
The canvas
What is a needlepoint canvas?
A stiff, open-weave mesh, usually cotton, with a design painted or printed on it. You stitch over the design, covering one intersection of the mesh with each stitch.
What is the difference between hand-painted and printed canvases?
A hand-painted canvas is painted by hand, usually by or for the designer that designed it. A printed canvas is printed by machine. Hand-painted canvases generally cost more because each copy takes a painter's time.
What does stitch-painted mean?
The canvas is painted so each intersection has one clear color, so you can see exactly which color goes where.
Who makes needlepoint canvases?
Designers: designers and design businesses who create designs and have them painted. Browse them at /designers.
Mesh and size
What does mesh count mean?
The number of holes per inch. 13 mesh has 13 stitches per inch; 18 mesh has 18. See mesh counts explained.
Which mesh is most common?
For hand-painted canvases, 13 and 18 mesh are the most common. Most common known mesh in our data: 18. Many listings do not state a mesh.
How is size given?
As the design area in inches, width by height. The canvas has a blank margin around it for blocking and finishing. See canvas sizes.
How long does a canvas take to stitch?
It depends on the size, the mesh, the stitches and the stitcher. A small ornament can take days; a large pillow or stocking can take months.
Can I change the colors on a canvas?
Yes. The painted colors are a guide, and many stitchers choose different threads for some areas. A store can help pick threads that work together.
Can I stitch a canvas without a stitch guide?
Yes. Any canvas can be stitched entirely in tent stitch, which is a complete and traditional way to work it.
Price
How much does a canvas cost?
Prices vary widely with size, mesh and painting detail. Median lowest listed price in our data: $71.00. The prices guide shows the range.
Why does the same canvas have different prices?
Each store sets its own price, and some include threads or a stitch guide. Compare what each listing includes.
What else will I pay for?
Usually threads, and possibly a stitch guide, stretcher bars or a frame, needles and finishing.
Threads and stitching
What thread do I use?
Common choices are wool, cotton, silk, metallics and blends. The weight must suit the mesh. A store can pull threads to match a canvas.
What is a stitch guide?
Instructions for one canvas saying which stitch and thread to use in each area. They are optional. See stitch guides explained.
What stitch do I start with?
Tent stitch, the basic diagonal stitch over one intersection. Basketweave and continental are two ways of working it. See starting needlepoint.
Finishing
What is finishing?
Turning a stitched canvas into a usable piece: an ornament, pillow, belt, eyeglass case, bag insert or framed piece. Many stores offer finishing through a finisher.
Do I need to block my canvas?
Usually. Stitching pulls the canvas out of square, and blocking (dampening and stretching it while it dries) restores the shape. Finishers often block as part of the job.
Buying and stock
Where do I buy a canvas?
From local needlepoint stores, in person or online, and sometimes from a designer's own store. See how to buy a needlepoint canvas and finding a local store.
Why is a canvas sold out?
Many canvases are painted in small batches. Stores often reorder, so many come back. See when canvases sell out.
How current is the stock shown here?
We show "In stock" or "Sold out" only for listings with a stock reading from the last 72 hours; otherwise the page says "Stock not tracked". Check the store's page before you buy.
About this directory
Do you sell canvases?
No. This directory lists canvases and the stores that carry them, and links to each store's own product page.
How is the data collected?
From the public listings on store websites, read on a regular schedule. The methodology page explains it, and the data is downloadable from /data.
How do I get a page corrected or removed?
See the contact page for corrections, takedowns and opt-outs.
Frequently asked questions
What is a needlepoint canvas?
A needlepoint canvas is a stiff, open-weave mesh, usually cotton, with a design painted or printed on it. You cover the design with stitches, one intersection of the mesh at a time.
What mesh count should I choose?
13 mesh is a common choice for a first project because the stitches are larger and faster to work. 18 mesh holds finer detail and is often used for ornaments and small pieces.
Does a canvas come with thread?
Usually not. Most canvases are sold on their own, and threads are chosen and bought separately, often with help from a store.
Where can I buy a needlepoint canvas?
Mostly from local needlepoint stores, in person or through their websites, and sometimes from a designer's own store. Each canvas page in this directory lists the stores we track that carry it.
What happens after I finish stitching?
The canvas is usually blocked back to square and then finished into a piece such as an ornament, pillow or belt, often by a professional finisher through a store.
Is a sold-out canvas gone for good?
Often not. Many canvases are painted in small batches and come back when a store reorders, though limited or retired designs may not return.
