When Needlepoint Canvases Sell Out, and How We Count It
Updated October 26, 2026
Needlepoint canvases sell out because many are painted by hand in small batches, so a store may hold only a few copies of a design. Many sell-outs are temporary: stores reorder and designers paint more. In our data for the 30 days to October 26, 2026, canvases with a sell-out at one or more stores: 2,012; restocks: 142.
Why canvases sell out
A hand-painted canvas is made one at a time, either by the designer's painters or by painters working for it. A designer can only paint so many copies of a design at once, and a store usually orders a few at a time. Demand is uneven:
- Seasonal designs, such as Christmas ornaments and stockings, are bought in the months before the season (see themes and seasons).
- New designs often draw early orders.
- Trunk shows and events can bring many orders for one designer at once.
- Limited editions are painted in a fixed number and may not return.
Will it come back?
Often. When a store reorders, the designer paints more copies, and the canvas comes back in stock. That can take days or months. Some designs are retired by the designer and do not return. If you want a canvas that is sold out:
- check the other stores on its canvas page, since another store may still have it;
- ask a store whether it can order it;
- check back later, since many canvases are restocked.
Sell-outs and restocks in our data
| Measure (in our data) | Value |
|---|---|
| Canvases that sold out at a store, last 30 days | 2,012 |
| Restocks, last 30 days | 142 |
| Stores whose stock we track | 20 |
| Share of tracked listings in stock | 41% |
| Stock history begins | July 8, 2026 |
Figures are as of October 26, 2026. Longer windows cover only the time since the stock history begins. The weekly and monthly reports list the canvases and designers with the most sell-outs, and the annual State of Needlepoint, also listed there, summarizes the year to date.
How we count
We count from regular readings of the public stock shown on store websites. The rules are simple and conservative.
Only tracked listings count
A listing is tracked when its store is one whose stock we read regularly and we have a confirmed stock reading for the listing from the last 72 hours. A listing that is not tracked says "Stock not tracked" and never adds to a count. A designer's own store is listed on its canvas pages but never counts toward sell-outs or restocks.
A sell-out
A sell-out is a listing at a tracked store going from in stock to sold out. Some stores take a canvas off their website when it sells instead of marking it sold out; where a store's own history shows it does this, such a removal is counted as a sell-out. A sudden removal of many listings at once, such as a website change, is not counted.
The 72-hour rule
If the same listing is back in stock within 72 hours of selling out, the sell-out is not counted. A quick flip like that is more often a stock correction or an immediate reorder than a real sell-out.
A restock
A restock is a listing coming back in stock after being sold out for at least 72 hours. Shorter gaps are not counted, for the same reason.
The 3-store minimum
A count about one canvas or one designer could point to a single store. So:
- a canvas page shows sell-out and restock figures only when the canvas is listed at three or more stores whose stock we track, and counts out of those stores (a designer's own store is not counted);
- a canvas or designer appears in a sell-out list only when sell-outs happened at three or more stores;
- where a count is one or two, it is shown as "1–2" (on a canvas page, "fewer than 3");
- a count that would leave fewer than three of a canvas's tracked stores out is shown as "most or all", so no count says which listed stores sold out;
- the number of price changes over 90 days follows the same rule.
No store is named
Sell-out and restock statistics never name a store, anywhere on this site. A canvas page still shows each store's current stock in its where-to-buy table, because that is a directory fact anyone can see on the store's website.
Reading the figures with care
- A count of sell-outs is not a count of copies sold. One sell-out means one store ran out, whether it held one copy or ten.
- Stock readings can be up to a few days old. Check the store's own page before you rely on one.
- Stores we do not track are not in these counts, so the figures describe the tracked part of the market, not all of it.

Frequently asked questions
Why do needlepoint canvases sell out?
Many canvases are painted by hand in small batches, so a store may hold only a few copies of a design. Popular and seasonal designs can sell out until the store receives more.
Will a sold-out canvas come back?
Often, but not always. Many canvases are restocked when the designer paints more, while limited or retired designs may not return. Another store may still have a copy.
What counts as a sell-out on this site?
A sell-out is counted when a listing at a store whose stock we track goes from in stock to sold out. If the same listing is back in stock within 72 hours, the sell-out is not counted.
Why does a canvas page not show sell-out figures?
A canvas shows sell-out and restock figures only when it is listed at three or more stores whose stock we track. With fewer a count could point to one store, so it is not shown.
Do you say which stores sold out?
No. Sell-outs and restocks are only ever published as counts. A canvas page still shows each store's current stock, which is a directory fact.
