Needlepoint Canvas Prices: What Canvases Cost
Updated October 26, 2026
Needlepoint canvas prices vary widely with size, mesh count and how much detail is painted. Middle half of lowest listed prices in our data, as of October 26, 2026: $57.00 to $92.00 (median $71.00). Threads, stitch guides and finishing are usually extra.
Prices in our data
These figures use each canvas's lowest listed price in US dollars across the stores that list it. They describe what stores are asking, not what any canvas sold for, and they change as stores update their listings.
| Measure | Lowest listed price |
|---|---|
| 25th percentile | $57.00 |
| Median | $71.00 |
| 75th percentile | $92.00 |
| Median, 13 mesh | $202.00 |
| Median, 18 mesh | $163.00 |
| Median, ornament size | — |
| Median, large size | — |
A dash means we have too few priced canvases in that group to give a figure. Per-mesh and per-theme price bands are on each mesh page and theme page, and the methodology page explains how prices are read.
Reading the price figures
- Lowest listed price means the cheapest US-dollar listing for a canvas across the stores that carry it. One figure per canvas keeps a canvas listed at many stores from counting many times.
- Median is the middle canvas: half are listed for less, half for more.
- 25th and 75th percentiles mark the middle half of canvases. A quarter are listed below the first and a quarter above the second.
- Group medians, such as by mesh or size, compare groups that also differ in other ways. A typical 18 mesh canvas is smaller than a typical 13 mesh canvas, for example, so the two medians are not a like-for-like comparison.
What drives the price
Size
A larger design area takes longer to paint and uses more canvas. Size is usually the biggest single factor. An ornament-sized canvas generally costs much less than a pillow or a stocking. See needlepoint canvas sizes.
Painting detail
A design with many colors, shading, faces or lettering takes longer to paint than a simple one at the same size. Some canvases are stitch-painted, meaning each intersection is painted a single clear color so the stitcher knows exactly which color goes where. That extra care is reflected in the price.
Mesh count
A finer mesh, such as 18, has more intersections to paint per square inch. Mesh alone does not set the price, though: a small 18 mesh ornament can cost less than a large 13 mesh pillow. The mesh guide covers this.
The designer and the edition
Designers often suggest a price for their own designs. Some designs are painted in limited runs, and some are exclusive to one store or event. Prices can rise over time as costs change.
The rest of the project
The canvas is often only part of the cost of a finished piece.
| Item | What it is | Usually included? |
|---|---|---|
| Threads | Wool, cotton, silk, metallics and blends chosen for the canvas | No |
| Stitch guide | Instructions for stitches and threads on one canvas | No |
| Stretcher bars or frame | Holds the canvas taut while you stitch | No |
| Needles and tools | Tapestry needles, laying tool, scissors | No |
| Finishing | Turning the stitched canvas into an ornament, pillow or other piece | No |
Some stores sell a canvas with a thread kit or stitch guide as one listing. When comparing prices, check what each listing includes.
Comparing prices across stores
Each canvas page in this directory lists every store we track that carries it, sorted by price, with the store's location and stock. Before buying:
- check the currency, since a store outside the United States may list in its own currency;
- check whether the listing includes threads or a guide;
- add shipping if you are buying online;
- confirm the price on the store's own page, which is always the final word.
We do not sell canvases or set prices, and a price shown here can be out of date by the time you visit a store.
How prices move
Stores change prices from time to time. Our weekly and monthly reports count price drops and increases across the market, and each canvas page summarizes the lowest and highest listed price over the last 90 days. The annual State of Needlepoint, also listed on the reports page, summarizes the year to date.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a needlepoint canvas cost?
Prices vary widely with size, mesh and painting detail. This guide shows the middle range of listed prices in our data, which is updated as stores change their listings.
Why are needlepoint canvases expensive?
Many canvases are painted by hand, one at a time or in small batches, and a detailed design takes the painter many hours. The price also covers the canvas, the designer's design work and the store's costs.
Are threads included in the price of a canvas?
Usually not. Threads, stitch guides and finishing are normally bought separately, and together they can cost as much as the canvas or more.
Does the same canvas cost the same everywhere?
Not always. Each store sets its own price, and some list a canvas together with threads or a stitch guide, so compare what each listing includes.
Do these prices include shipping or tax?
No. The figures are the prices stores list for the canvas itself. Shipping, tax and any extras are added by the store at checkout.
