# Needlepoint Canvas Sizes: From Ornaments to Pillows

*Updated October 25, 2026*

A needlepoint canvas's size is usually given as the design area in inches, width by height, with a blank margin of canvas around it. Sizes run from ornaments a few inches across to pillows, stockings and larger pieces. Size, together with mesh count, decides how many stitches a project has and is the biggest single factor in price.

## How sizes are written

Listings normally state the **design area**: the painted part of the canvas, for example "5 × 7 in". Some listings give the overall canvas size instead, and some give no size at all. When a size matters to you, ask the store which one it is.

The piece of canvas is larger than the design. A **margin** of blank canvas is left on every side, commonly a couple of inches. The margin is used to attach the canvas to stretcher bars, to block it back to square after stitching, and by the finisher. Do not trim it.

## Stitch counts

Size and mesh together give the number of stitches:

> stitches = (width × mesh) × (height × mesh)

| Design area | On 13 mesh | On 18 mesh |
|---|---|---|
| 3 × 3 in | 1,521 | 2,916 |
| 4 × 4 in | 2,704 | 5,184 |
| 5 × 7 in | 5,915 | 11,340 |
| 10 × 10 in | 16,900 | 32,400 |
| 14 × 14 in | 33,124 | 63,504 |

These are tent-stitch counts. Decorative stitches cover the canvas differently, but the table is a fair guide to how much work a design involves.

## Measuring a canvas yourself

To check a canvas you already have, measure the painted area at its widest and tallest points, in inches. For an irregular shape, such as a cut-out ornament, measure the rectangle that would just contain it. Then measure the blank margin on each side. If any margin is much narrower than a couple of inches, mention it to whoever will finish the piece before you start stitching, since some finishes need more canvas to work with.

## Size categories in the directory

The directory groups canvases into **ornament**, **small**, **medium** and **large** where the size is known, and "unknown" otherwise. The groups are broad, and the dimensions on each canvas page are the better guide.

| Measure (in our data) | Value |
|---|---|
| Share of canvases in the ornament group | under 1% |
| Median lowest price, ornament group | — |
| Median lowest price, large group | — |

Figures are as of October 26, 2026. A dash means there are too few priced canvases in that group.

## Common finished pieces and their sizes

Sizes vary by designer and design. These are typical ranges, not rules.

- **Ornaments**: small, often 3 to 5 inches across, in rounds, rectangles and cut-out shapes. Many are painted on 18 mesh.
- **Key fobs, tags and small accessories**: a few inches long and narrow.
- **Eyeglass cases and small pouches**: a long narrow rectangle.
- **Belts and straps**: long, narrow strips sized to a length; finishers fit them to hardware.
- **Pillows**: medium to large, often 10 to 16 inches square or as a rectangle. Many are painted on 13 mesh.
- **Stockings**: tall, shaped designs, among the largest common canvases.
- **Framed pieces and wall hangings**: any size.

Holiday designs include many ornaments and stockings; see [needlepoint themes and seasons](https://ndlpt.space/guides/needlepoint-themes-and-seasons).

## Size and time

A larger design takes longer. Doubling the width and height of a design means four times the stitches. Choosing a finer mesh for the same size adds more again: 18 mesh has nearly twice as many stitches per square inch as 13 mesh. For a first project, a small or medium canvas on 13 mesh is a common choice. See [starting needlepoint](https://ndlpt.space/guides/starting-needlepoint).

## Size and finishing

The finished piece is usually a little different from the design area. A pillow may have a border of fabric, piping or extra stitched background. An ornament may be backed and trimmed close to the design. If you plan a particular finish, ask the store or finisher before you start; some finishes need extra stitched background around the design.

## Size and price

Larger designs take longer to paint and generally cost more. ## Frequently asked questions

### How is the size of a needlepoint canvas measured?

Listings usually give the design area in inches, width by height. The piece of canvas itself is larger, because a blank margin is left around the design.

### How big a margin should a needlepoint canvas have?

A margin of a couple of inches on every side is common. It gives room for stretcher bars, blocking and finishing, so the canvas should not be trimmed close to the design.

### How many stitches are in a needlepoint canvas?

Multiply the width in inches by the mesh count, do the same for the height, and multiply the two. A 5 by 5 inch design on 13 mesh is 65 by 65, or 4,225 stitches.

### What size is a needlepoint ornament?

Ornament canvases are small, often a few inches across. The exact size depends on the design and the shape of the finished ornament.

### Does a bigger canvas cost more?

Generally yes. A larger design takes longer to paint and uses more canvas, so size is usually the biggest factor in a canvas's price.
